FIRSTLY, ADRIANNE, PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF...

Hello! I’m an Australian Artist and Graphic Designer based in Torquay, Victoria. Finding beauty in the simple things and a deep love for being by the water and all tales of travel. Recently quitting my day job to go full time as an artist and freelance graphic designer.

My latest series ‘Drift Collection’, is a series of hand drawn maps of alluring location around the world. Illustrated with many fine liners of various points to capture the finest detail in the artwork and a torn edges to enhance it’s rustic beauty. Palm trees, compasses also join the series with a large scale World Atlas piece that also features on a beautifully turquoise tinted surfboard. These pieces are to hang on your wall to inspire to travel. A true keepsake from your adventures and a reminder to keep exploring, on land and water.

HOW DID YOU CAME UP WITH THE IDEA TO START DRAWING MAPS?

I’ve been drawing them for years, I’ve always loved the old vintage maps.

When I was in university, we had to do a project on travel and I included various old maps in my project as I loved that way it looked and showed the history.  I then wanted to have a world map of my surf board and thought, if I wanted one I would have to draw it myself.

So I did just that and continued my maps of places I’ve been and had my first solo exhibition Drift. I’ve continued places on my bucket list and do commissions for peoples special places and love it!

YOU´RE ART IS REALLY FANTASTIC, DID YOU GET QUALIFIED OR ARE YOU SELF TAUGHT?

Thank you so much! I’ve always loved drawing and studied art all throughout high school. I studied Graphic Design and Communication at University which had drawing/arts subjects which I loved.

TALK US THROUGH THE PROCESS OF CREATING YOUR ARTWORK?

Creating my artwork, I look up and research the place I wish to draw or if I get inspired by something with a certain place. I look at on google earth on where things are positioned, I also look into terrain view to see what the texture of the country or city looks like and then sketch out the outline in pencil and add texture, waves, mountains and cities/places ect. I then repeat this in several times in fine liner pens to get the right amount of detail and texture.  I tear the edges by hand to give the hand made, vintage aesthetic .

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO DRAW?

All things of life by the sea and travel. I moved from the city to a town near the beach and it has been one of the best things I’ve done. I love all things by the water and coastal life. I’ve also been lucky enough to travel to some pretty amazing spots in the world and take that all in for inspiration. I currently have a lot of ideas of drawings and projects I want to do! The Drift collection is particularly inspired by this, and is about the journey that is travelling, wandering from place to place. Finding a new home is wherever you choose to lay your bag. The vintage aesthetic inspires thought of places yet to be discovered and waiting to be found.

WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?

Doing things and with people I love! Drawing and painting being create in general made me literally do a happy dance! I love surfing especially with friends, travel and even just hanging out anywhere with friends and family. Sometimes the simple things with friends are my favourite.

I BELIEVE YOU ALSO SURF, WHERE´S YOUR LOCAL BEACH AND WHAT´S IT LIKE THERE?

Yes! It depended if I want to ride my longboard, which I do most of the time, Torquay Point is a simple one that’s close to home. Otherwise, there’s some real gems down the coast along The Great Ocean Road. For short board waves, there’s Jan Juc beach which is fun and very pretty, especially when the sun’s out!

YOU JUST GOT A FREE PLANE TICKET TO ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

Hmmm! Hard one! Either Morocco or Greece! I might have to go to Morocco as I haven’t been yet and have been wanting to go for years. I just finished a map of Morocco and when I was looking into all the little places I was loosing my mind on how amazing it looks! Greece is always amazing! My dad is Greek so I have been several times and always love the people, lifestyle and food!
